Food for body & soul
with Susan Hopkinson & Teresa Fernandez-Gil, PhD

Join us one Monday each month to practice mindful consumption and healthy eating with two experts in their field. Susan begins each session with a discussion and practice of mindfulness centered on mindful eating, then Teresa guides us step-by-step through the preparation of a very simple yet nutritious meal (always gluten, dairy and sugar-free!) that we will enjoy eating together mindfully in Noble Silence.

The full course comprises 4 sessions in spring 2015 from 11-13:00

Being mindful of how and what we eat is both a spiritual and an ethical practice. When we slow down and notice what we are doing in any part of the day, we connect to the present moment and become calmer and more focused.

Doing this while preparing and eating our food improves digestion, absorption of nutrients and allows us to recognize when we have eaten enough – which is often well before our plates are empty! As a result, we eat to live, rather than live to eat. We can also more clearly see how our ways of consuming affect all of life around us, and appreciate how much was involved in bringing food to our table.

Our food is the gift of the whole universe!

Susan Hopkinson has practiced yoga since 1985 and taught since 1998. Yogic and Buddhist teachings have given her support and guidance through major life challenges, and amongst her most influential teachers she credits Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh with showing her the power of living mindfully in the present moment. Susan and her two teens have been going to Mindfulness retreats at Plum Village in France several weeks a year since 2008.

Teresa Fernandez-Gil, PhD, works as a Nutritionist and Health Counselor. She practices an integrative approach that has helped many people revive their health and vitality by introducing key but easy changes in their lifestyle and cooking habits. She currently practices in Brussels where she resides with her husband and four children.

An ecumenical spiritual book club open to all who want to share the journey through the writings of those who have lived extraordinary and inspiring lives.

Our first meeting on Sunday 7 September we will review “Dying to be Me” by Anita Moorjani (2012, 208 pages), a remarkable story of a near-death experience and a complete healing from terminal cancer.

“The Snow Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen (1973, 336 pages) will be reviewed at our second meeting on Sunday 12 October. The author recounts his journey to the Himalayas as a biologist, which parallels his profound inner journey along the way.

On November 16 we look at “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom (2003, 224 pages), a touching conversation between a dying man with a great sense of life and his devoted student.

December 14 finds us discussing “Man’s Search for Meaning”, psychiatrist and Auschwitz survivor Viktor Frankl’s remarkable story of how to turn away from suffering towards a life of joyful purpose. (1959, etc., ±200 pages)

Mindful Living

Life can be pretty challenging at times, and it’s hard to find balance in an imbalanced world. Nearly three decades of practicing yoga and mindfulness have brought me enormous rewards, allowing me to navigate some pretty rough waters, ultimately emerging stronger and lighter from each challenge.

I am pleased to share this experience by offering a nine-session mindfulness course, called Mindful Living, which is modeled on the format of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, and strongly influenced by the tradition and teachings of my teacher, Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.

This course is an invitation to move towards greater balance, peace and participation in life through a more conscious awareness of our attitudes, feelings and impulses. Our sessions may involve working with stress, burnout, pain, illness and the many other challenges and demands of everyday life, according to the needs of the group.

Through this course you will be introduced to a variety of simple meditation and movement practices designed to cultivate presence and awareness. Practices include sitting meditation, body awareness, yoga and the ten mindful movements, as well as group discussions and a range of informal meditation exercises.

The classes are ecumenical, and appropriate for people of all ages and backgrounds, including those coping with stress, chronic pain and illness, mild depression, anxiety and panic disorders, sleep disturbances, digestive problems, fatigue, heart trouble, high blood pressure and headaches. Mindfulness supports us as individuals, and also supports and benefits the work of teachers, therapists and other caregivers.

DATES:

Thursday 4 December: Free Information Session & Orientation (19:00 – 20:30)

Evening classes on Thursday 11, 18 December, 2, 9, 16 January 8, 15, 22, 29 from 19:00 – 21:30

Saturday 7 February – Half-day mindfulness retreat 12:30-18 (bring a picnic lunch)

and the final session will be on Thursday 12 February from 19:00 – 21:30

A weekend retreat at Radhadesh in the Belgian Ardennes

From Friday 26 to Sunday 28 September 2014

Take a brief respite from daily life and enjoy the many facets of yoga, plus great vegetarian food, and the fresh air and beauty of the Ardennes at Radhadesh (Château de Petite Somme) in Durbuy.

Attend the entire weekend for optimum benefit, or just join us when you can.

Non-participating partners and children sharing a room are welcome to spend the weekend enjoying the beauty and quiet of the surrounding forests and the charm of Durbuy, only 6 kms away, and to take meals in the restaurant at own expense. Please note that here is no childcare available, and children cannot attend group sessions.

14:30-15:30 – Walking Meditation and/or Digestive Yoga (weather dependent)

16:00-18:00 – Sacred geometry – the many triangles of yoga practice!

18:15-19:30 – Dinner

19:45-21:00 – Nada yoga – Using the voice to generate a healing vibration and meditative state.

21:00 until morning – practicing Noble Silence

A taste of India in Brussels!

About Mataji and Ganga:

Narvada Puri travelled from Germany to India when she was 24 years old. After one year trip around India, she met Baba Santosh Puri, her Guru, and she never left him again. For 30 years, she stayed with him and followed his teaching.

They lived for 10 years on an island by the Ganges River, and established an Ashram together, where they had 3 children. Babaji left his body in 2001. Maa Narvada and the children continue life in the bliss of Guruji’s benediction.

Ganga Puri is the son of Baba Santosh Puri and Narvada Puri. He spent his chilhood in company of holy men and women. Initially, he studied Physics and Mathematics, but after the Mahasamadhi of his father, Ganga transformed his life into one of complete devotion to the Divine Truth, and meditation and yoga became his main focus.

He studied at the Gurukul Kangri University, and now devotes his energy to leading yoga courses and Vedic studies for aspirants of truth.

The Laboratory of Life uses the configuration of people through the space of a room or other environment to create a dynamic map of relationship that will enable us to use our personal energies more effectively and create more optimal patterns for our lives. Human consciousness is holographic, and can be perceived in relationship to other people and within our environment. Current neurological research indicates that all of our experiences are recorded holographically in our brains. In other cultures this principle is well known. For example, Feng Shui, the Chinese science of spatial relationships, has been used for millennia to promote health and prosperity. Just as when we build a house, we start with a blueprint, in the Laboratory of Life we create multi-dimensional blueprints for the dreams and goals we wish to bring to fruition that can be “read” for inspiration, necessary resources, course of action, course correction, and successful outcome.

This work is highly practical and accessible as well as spiritually uplifting, without limits in its application. It is powerful, exciting and profound!
