This Full Moon celebrates the Buddha

Today’s full moon is traditionally dedicated to the Buddha’s birthday and is known as Buddha Purnima (the full moon of the Buddha). Historians can’t agree when he was born exactly, but it was certainly over 2500 years ago. His teachings are unparalleled for their understanding of human nature and psychology. If people could get beyond the mistaken notion that Buddhism is a religion (although through local adaptations in some cultures it has effectively become one), it would be clear that what the Buddha taught is of universal benefit and far from exclusive or dogmatic. Some yoga practitioners, including many yoga teachers, are not sure why the Buddha so often shows…

Starting a new two-year cycle of action & ambition

Today’s Full Moon in Libra highlights relationships, especially what we might need to change in ourselves or in our relationship to others. But before we decide what needs changing, we first need to find out what we want going forward and where we want to end up. What kind of future do you envisage? What are your goals and hopes for the future? Feelings can be intense around this time – keep your temper, especially if others can’t keep theirs! There might be a lot of communicating around needs and desires, which can be difficult to balance with those of others. Solutions might not be obvious right now, and compromise and…

Ready, set, GO! A good time for an upgrade.

Feeling ready to move on in life? With a new lunar cycle just underway, and a new solar cycle about to begin at the Vernal Equinox on Tuesday afternoon, these are good days to make serious plans for what you want to create in the weeks and months ahead, and start taking action this week. In yoga, we use Sankalpa to plant the seeds of what we want to manifest in our lives. Ideally, this is done in a fully relaxed state such as during yoga nidra when the mind is in the liminal state between sleep and wakefulness, making it highly receptive to suggestion (essentially a hypnotic state). Unlike…

Happy Women’s Day to everyone who ever had a mother

Dear students and friends in yoga, It says a lot about our era that we need to be reminded to celebrate women today, International Women’s Day. In distant times, the power of the divine feminine was understood to underlie all life, and across the world we can find traces of ancient shamanic and religious rituals and artefacts worshipping the principle of female energy in gratitude for this fragile gift. For so, so long, women and the nurturing, life-giving energy we provide were dismissed as less important than men and their outer drives for power. This imbalance has led us to live in a world where the feminine forces that sustain…

    Perception, proprioception and purpose

Given the extreme cold of the past few weeks, I am a very reluctant dog walker these days. Living through twenty-four Canadian winters was plenty enough for me; I’m definitely a warm weather gal! Metta has learned to start looking hopeful only once my second cup of masala chai is finished, by which point I have run out of excuses. By the time I head out the door I am wearing about five layers of clothing, which makes it harder to move freely and to gauge my new, temporarily puffier shape.  Muffled into these layers changes the way I perceive my body and how I relate to the world around…

Virgo Full Moon brings a fuller perspective

Under the light of this Virgo Full Moon we could have important realisations about the current balance between the needs of our heart and those of our intellect – this is a good time to start your Spring cleaning, from the inside out! The Indian festival of colours known as Holi is celebrated at the first full moon of Spring, and playing with colours helps to shake off the dullness of winter. It is traditionally a time to clean up and clear out stagnant energy in preparation for the activities Spring (after throwing coloured powder around!), as well as being a celebration of the vibrant life and colours of the…

Eclipsing old networks, associations and goals?

Eclipses form a part of a larger cycle spanning about 19 years, so with today’s Partial Solar Eclipse (15/2) we can look back to February 1999. Significant themes in your outer and/or inner life will appear to be cycling around once again, since these current Eclipses are activating the exact same spots in your chart as 19 years ago (there was a Lunar Eclipse in Leo on January 31st 1999, and a Solar Eclipse in Aquarius February 16th 1999). Can you remember your life’s major events back then? What was changing for you? Were you disengaging from certain social groups in order to explore your independence in a whole new…

    Puppy love

As much as Valentine’s Day can be a really sweet time, I can’t help but cringe as it rolls around each year.  Is it the commercial overtones? The awkwardly out-of-character expressions of love? Are we all going through the motions to avoid seeming like we don’t care? My inner rebel has always been conflicted about Valentine’s Day because I don’t quite know how to handle it. It feels rather churlish to ignore people who launch a barrage of hearts and messages of love, and it feels unfriendly not to say it to others myself. The social pressure – not to mention the commercial pressure – is even harder to avoid…
