Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation. But better still is surrender of attachment to results, because there follows immediate peace. ~Bhagavad Gita, 12:12
Non-attachment is one of the principal teachings of all ancient wisdom traditions, and allows us to remain in the flow of life where the only constant is change. Called aparigraha in Sanskrit, it is the fifth of the five Yama, or observances, in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. It’s a profound concept, but essentially it means taking only what we need, keeping only what is necessary in the moment, and – most importantly – letting go when the time is right! This is a year of purification for all of us, and to do this well we need to travel lightly.
There’s a new buzz in the air this week and it’s not just because of the post-holiday vibe. So much is happening this week as the energy of 2016 changes, and in many ways this week sets the tone for the next few months. Especially important is the near total eclipse of the sun, which happens tomorrow (September 1st – but only visible in parts of Africa). Eclipse energy works a couple of weeks before and for up to six months after the event – this one will continue to be highlighted right into February.
Eclipses on the lunar North node take us exactly where we need to go, collectively and individually. This one is also particularly energised by the challenging Saturn and Neptune aspects that have been clouding judgement for most of this year. The confusion and lack of clarity of the past few months is shifting into a new clarity that will help us all move forward in constructive ways. The highly-charged energy of September can be used to take steps towards our biggest goals, although at it’s worst, it can also bring aggression and violence.
Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt. ~Shakespeare
Don’t resist the changes that are necessary in your life, whether you are making them or they get thrust upon you. Something needs to be improved or changed in our daily routines. Where do we need to change our attitude towards life? Are we limited by thinking things need to be or look a certain way? Are we settling for the most obvious answers which simply gloss over a complex situation rather than resolving it? Perhaps we’re waiting for something or someone to save us or fix things that we don’t like in life? We are the ones we have been waiting for! The energy for something seems to have run its course: it’s time for a major rethink.
This is the last eclipse in Virgo for ten more years, and the end of a 19-year cycle that began on September 2nd 1997. Princess Diana’s death two days earlier was a global event that forever changed people’s perception of the British Monarchy, journalism and social icons. Personally, there will be a resonance now with what was going on in your life at that time – for me, it was only a few weeks afterwards that I left the European Commission, and changed my life completely. Watch this space!
We are living at such an unnatural pace that many people equate resting and replenishing one’s energy with laziness or failure. But only in a more relaxed frame of mind and body will you even remember what you are trying to achieve. Notice how strong and dignified you can be when you operate at whatever your natural pace happens to be at any given time. Sit alone quietly every day, with no devices, and no agenda.
The search for personal and collective balance, harmony between ourselves and others, and finding a place to be our truest self – these will be our major challenges in the year ahead.
We’re expanding into something completely new, like waking up from a long, confusing dream. The world is not just changing, it has already changed, and we must shift up a gear to align with what is true right now.
I wish you every success with your new projects and ideas for this brand new moment, and for every new moment to come!
With much love and light,
